Roma dominated possession and entered the penalty area more often, but lacked accuracy in the final shots: Dybala’s effort from the center of the box missed the target. Then Ferguson suffered a lower-back injury and left the pitch, with El Shaarawy coming on in his place.
Sassuolo mainly responded with a few counterattacks. One of the most dangerous chances fell to Fadera after a pass from Matic, but Svilar saved the shot aimed at the near post to rescue the hosts.
In the second half, the Giallorossi increased pressure down the wings: Tsimikas and Celik regularly delivered balls into the box. In the 62nd minute, the referee awarded a penalty for Mourich’s foul on Soule, but VAR spotted an offside and the decision was overturned.
Still, the Wolves had their say. In the 77th minute, Kone won the aerial duel and headed Soule’s cross from the flank into the net. Two minutes later, with Sassuolo opening up, Roma found space and Soule finished Gilardi’s low cross to make it 2–0.
