A number of major Chinese automakers are planning to build new factories or acquire existing ones to rejuvenate and renew their potential in order to capture the European market. This was reported by the director of "Avtostat" Sergey Selikov on his Telegram channel, citing data from the French analytical center Inoviev.
New steps to enter the European market
BYD is completing the construction of its plant in the Hungarian city of Szeged. The first model is expected to be produced at this plant in the fall of next year. The company plans to produce four different models for the European market in 2026-2027, including the Dolphin Surf (segment B) model. Also, a second BYD plant could be built in Turkey, and a third in Italy.
European connections of Chery and SAIC Group
The Chery car brand will begin reusing the former Nissan plant in Barcelona at the end of 2024. Currently, Ebro and Omoda models are being assembled at this plant. In addition, the MG brand, part of SAIC Group, is one of the leading sellers in the European market among Chinese auto companies.
Geely, Dongfeng, and Xpeng's plans
Geely plans to produce its Smart and Polestar models in Europe directly for this market. According to the analysis, it is possible to build a plant in Hungary, the Czech Republic, or Slovakia. It is said that the probability of choosing Slovakia is high. The plant is expected to be commissioned in 2028. The Dongfeng and Xpeng brands are also preparing to enter the European market.
Conclusion
Chinese automakers are trying to counter global competition by building new factories and acquiring existing ones to enter the European market. Each of their steps will lead to major changes in the European automotive industry.
