For many people, coffee is an inseparable part of starting the day. Some take their first steps in the morning with a cup of coffee. But at what time is it actually more beneficial? Sleep specialist and endocrinologist Daria Lebedeva explained this in an interview with “Gazeta.ru”, touching on several important points.
According to the specialist, people have very different responses to caffeine. "Some feel energized and alert after a cup of coffee. Others become anxious, their hands tremble, and their heart rate increases. And a third group feels sleepy after drinking coffee," said the doctor.
These differences are linked to genetic traits of the body. Some people metabolize caffeine within two hours, while for others, it can take up to 12 hours. Therefore, universal advice doesn't apply to everyone. Still, there are general rules.
The doctor emphasized that the best time for coffee is one or two hours after waking up. This is when cortisol — the stress hormone — starts to drop. That’s when coffee has the most effective impact.
Lebedeva added that if a person has trouble sleeping, they should avoid drinking coffee after 2:00 PM. "Even one cup of coffee after lunch can affect natural nighttime sleep," she said.
If a person constantly experiences insomnia, restlessness, fatigue, and irritability, the doctor recommends avoiding coffee entirely. "In such cases, it's better to consult a specialist than to self-diagnose," warned Lebedeva.
She stressed that coffee itself isn’t harmful — the problem lies in uncontrolled consumption. In small amounts, it may help with focus, mood, and physical stamina. But drinking 5–6 cups a day can lead to stress, insomnia, and headaches. If coffee has become your “crutch” against tiredness, that’s a red flag.
"In this case, the best approach is to cut down on coffee and, most importantly, restore your sleep schedule. Ignoring chronic fatigue can lead to serious consequences," concluded the doctor.
Drinking coffee consciously and in tune with your body not only protects your health but also boosts your daily mood and productivity. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
