With summer comes lighter, more breathable footwear like sandals and slippers. But according to medical experts, choosing the wrong pair can lead to fatigue or even long-term foot problems.
Backless shoes that only have straps across the top can shift body weight forward and overstress foot muscles and tendons. This puts users at higher risk of sprains and foot strain.
Many summer sandals lack proper cushioning. As a result, the foot absorbs more impact while walking. Over time, this can lead to plantar fasciitis — inflammation of the tissue on the sole.
Shoes with thin, hard soles are also a concern. These can compress nerves between the toes, causing Morton’s neuroma — pain or numbness between the toes. Dr. Kim Yoo-geun from Himchan Hospital recommends switching to soft-soled shoes with wider toe boxes if you notice toe pain.
Another issue, especially for women, is hallux valgus, or bunions. Narrow shoes can gradually bend the big toe toward the second, causing joint protrusion and chronic pain. Left untreated, this can lead to foot deformity.
The key is reducing pressure. Choose shoes made of soft, shock-absorbing materials. Heels should not exceed 5 cm, as higher heels increase stress on the front of the foot.
Because many people have one foot slightly larger, measure both and buy shoes based on the larger foot.
Strengthening the muscles that control toe movement can also help maintain long-term foot health.
During summer, heel skin dries out easily due to lack of oil glands. Open-back shoes and air conditioning worsen the issue, leading to cracking. Wearing socks helps, but if that’s too hot, apply moisturizer regularly to avoid dryness. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
