Psychological studies show that excessive attachment in relationships and stalking partners on social media have negative consequences. A recent Italian study confirmed: these behaviors can lead to memory decline, inability to concentrate, anxiety, and even depression, writes Pravilamag.
The research findings were published in Behavioural Brain Research journal. From July 2022 to May 2023, 600 adult Italians participated. Over 70 % of respondents were women.
Participants completed surveys on:
-
levels of anxiety and worry,
-
propensity for depression,
-
memory and attention capacity,
-
mental resilience,
-
social media usage patterns.
Researchers found a clear correlation:
-
People with strong romantic dependency often experienced diminished attention.
-
High dependency was associated with increased anxiety and depressive symptoms.
-
Constantly checking a partner’s social media profiles heightened jealousy and obsessive thoughts, impairing work performance and negatively affecting emotional wellbeing.
In today’s Uzbekistan, widespread social media use makes this issue relevant. Especially among young people, romantic relationships and social media surveillance via Instagram, Telegram, TikTok are common.
This kind of stalking—persistent monitoring—can destabilize mental health. Paying constant attention to who liked your partner’s photo or where they are located can reduce productivity, impair memory, and interfere with learning.
Psychologists recommend:
-
Maintaining boundaries and respecting personal space in romantic relationships.
-
Limiting social media usage time.
-
Focusing on personal needs, interests, and emotional stability.
-
Seeking professional help when necessary.
