Australian scientists have found that fast food, which is widely consumed by humans, has a serious impact on the natural defense system of the intestine. The scientific conclusions on this were published in the journal “Immunity”.
In this study, an experiment conducted on mice showed that in just two days, animals switched to a high-fat diet had a decrease in the level of a protein called IL-22. This protein plays an important role in tissue repair and protection of the intestinal mucosa.
Despite the fact that the mice looked completely healthy from the outside, it was found that their intestinal walls were thickened, and immune cells, which are signs of inflammation, accumulated in the tissues. Scientists assessed this as “a slow but dangerous problem that starts inside.”
This situation is also very relevant for the human body. Fast food and similar products can have a very strong effect in a short time and cause harm to health. This scientifically proven condition can also lead to long-term chronic inflammation.
Scientists have concluded that if a person eats unsaturated fats (avocado, flaxseed oil, nuts) instead of saturated fats (for example, fried foods), the intestinal barrier is restored and the risk of inflammation decreases.
