In the United States, cases of and mortality rates from rectal cancer among young people are rising rapidly. This situation is causing serious concern among scientists and physicians.
According to studies, rectal cancer is spreading two to three times faster than colon cancer. If this trend continues, by 2035, this disease could become one of the leading causes of death among those under 50.
According to experts, in 2026, more than 158,000 new cases of colorectal cancer are expected to be diagnosed in the U.S., and over 55,000 people are expected to die from this disease. It is noted that a large proportion of those who die are under the age of 65.
New scientific research shows that the increase in cancer among young people is mainly related to the rise in rectal cancer. Since the late 1990s, the disease has been growing by approximately 3 percent annually.
Scientists are trying to determine the causes of this dangerous trend. According to preliminary estimates, changes in gut microbiota, poor diet, and high consumption of sugary drinks may be factors. At the same time, the absence of traditional risk factors in many young patients makes the issue even more complex.
Experts are urging the public to undergo early screenings and adhere to a healthy lifestyle.
