Why you should not pour away the water used to boil eggs

If you are among those who pour the water used for boiling eggs down the sink, you may need to think twice before doing so next time.

According to experts, pouring the water remaining after cooking eggs into the sink is not recommended. The primary reason is the negative impact of boiling water on the plumbing system. Specifically, siphons, their corrugated hoses, and PVC pipes in the sewage system can lose their density. This is because the rubber gaskets in these components are not designed for high temperatures and can quickly fail under the influence of boiling water.

Furthermore, if the sink is made of synthetic materials, especially acrylic, the impact of boiling water and the frequent alternation between cold and hot water can cause small cracks to appear on its surface. Over time, these cracks may deepen, leading to fractures in the sink.

Boiling water should only be poured away if the plumbing components are made of metal. Additionally, sinks made of porcelain stoneware and agglomerate are exceptions, as such materials can withstand temperatures up to 180°C.

Instead of wasting the water used to boil eggs, experts recommend cooling it down and using it for household needs, particularly for watering indoor plants. This is because eggshells are rich in substances vital for plants, such as calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate, which make up nearly 90 percent of their composition. During the boiling process, a portion of the calcium is released from the shell into the water.

Calcium participates in many metabolic processes in plants, influences the exchange of carbohydrates and proteins, and helps maintain the soil's acidity level at a normal range.

However, moderation is important here as well. Excessive calcium can prevent plants from absorbing other micronutrients. For instance, it can negatively affect the absorption of boron and nitrogen and bind iron compounds. This can lead to the appearance of white spots on leaves and a slowdown in plant growth. Therefore, it is considered appropriate to use such water once every 3–4 weeks.
