The Kremlin considers the United States to be the main "party" in the peace talks with Ukraine. This was announced by the press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov.
"One way or another, of course, Ukraine will also participate in the talks. Of course, there will be bilateral Russian-American talks in this dialogue, and of course there will be talks involving Ukraine," the Kremlin representative said.
"We understand, of course, that the main party in this process is Washington," he added.
According to Peskov, the Russian and US presidents did not discuss the possibility of Europe participating in the peace talks during their telephone conversation.
"This was not discussed during yesterday's conversation, and the topic of Europe was not raised. "In fact, the Europeans themselves will have to talk to Washington to somehow take their place," he said.
According to Peskov, it is now necessary to give Moscow and Washington time to "develop working relations," during which the "agenda" of the upcoming meeting of the Russian and US presidents will be discussed.
Peskov recalled that Riyadh (the capital of Saudi Arabia) has been mentioned as a venue for a meeting between Putin and Trump and that it is "suitable" for this, but "no decisions have been made on this issue yet."
On February 12, US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. After the conversation with Putin, he announced that he agreed to immediately start negotiations on Ukraine. The Kremlin described Putin's conversation with Trump as "very constructive, working and sincere." Trump said that his upcoming meeting with Putin could take place in Saudi Arabia.
