Tense negotiations took place in Geneva between Iran and European countries. On June 20, a face-to-face meeting was held in Geneva, Switzerland, between Iran, the "Eurotrio" (United Kingdom, France, Germany), and diplomats from the European Union. This was reported by the reputable "Financial Times" publication.
This meeting was Iran’s first official direct communication with Western diplomats since Israel launched military operations against Iran on June 13. The talks mainly focused on Iran's nuclear program and its ballistic missile activities.
The West is bringing Iran back to the negotiation table
The negotiations occurred exactly at the time when U.S. President Donald Trump took a two-week pause to consider providing additional military aid to Israel. Observers and political analysts do not consider this a coincidence.
According to experts, Israel is losing up to 200 million dollars per day in the war with Iran. This puts serious doubt on Israel's ability to sustain a long-term military campaign alone.
Europe: “There is another way”
The European Union and the “Eurotrio” states consider this meeting an opportunity to urge Iran toward a political solution, reduce tensions in the region, and protect Tehran from U.S. bombings.
According to diplomatic sources cited by “The Washington Post,” Iran is currently in its weakest position in recent years, and this presents a unique opportunity for the West to bring it back to negotiations.
French President Emmanuel Macron especially emphasized the importance of negotiations:
“The nuclear crisis cannot be resolved solely by military strikes. Some sites in Iran are heavily protected. Furthermore, no one knows exactly where the 60-percent-enriched uranium is located. We need technical monitoring and a political agreement.”
Deadly losses in the Israel-Iran war
According to reports, on June 13, Israel carried out large-scale airstrikes on several Iranian cities — targeting nuclear facilities and locations of high-ranking military officials. As a result, the head of Iran’s General Staff, top commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), nine prominent nuclear scientists, and other key figures were killed.
According to official Iranian data, since June 13, at least 585 people have been killed and over 1,300 have been injured.
In response, Iran launched ballistic missile strikes against Israel. Officially, 24 people were killed and more than 500 were wounded in those attacks. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
