In the Netherlands, the ban on mobile phones and other electronic devices in schools has significantly increased students' attention. This was revealed by a survey conducted on behalf of the Dutch government.
75% of the 317 secondary schools that participated in the study reported that after the ban was introduced, students started paying more attention in class. Additionally, 60% of schools observed an improvement in the social environment, and 30% recorded an increase in academic performance.
Dutch Deputy Minister of Education Marielle Paul, acknowledging the positive outcomes, stated:
“The absence of phones contributes to more focus in class, less distraction, and increased social activity. The efforts of the schools in this regard are commendable.”
The ban on the use of smartphones and tablets came into effect on January 1, 2024, in general and primary education schools. The ban also includes exceptions for certain medical needs — for example, when hearing aids are connected to mobile devices.
The study showed that primary school students usually start bringing phones to school only in higher grades. Therefore, at this stage, the impact of the ban was not very noticeable.
The Dutch experience demonstrates that reducing digital distractions positively transforms not only the educational process but also the social environment among students. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
