In today's digital age, cybersecurity has become one of the most relevant and rapidly growing fields globally. The shortage of nearly four million qualified cybersecurity professionals clearly demonstrates the demand in this sector. In meeting this demand, somewhat unexpectedly, former military personnel – veterans – are playing a vital role.
During their years of service, former military members acquire qualities such as strict discipline, quick and accurate problem-solving, effective teamwork, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. These are precisely the competencies that are essential in cybersecurity.
James Murphy, a representative of the UK-based Forces Employment Charity, recalling his military experience, emphasizes how the sensitivity developed in the army can be useful in cybersecurity: “A simple trash bin left on the road when it's not collection day raises concern – that's instinct, that's alertness, which is exactly what's needed in cybersecurity.”
In the military, one often faces intense situations, responds directly to threats, and must change pre-planned strategies on the fly. Similarly, in cybersecurity, threats are anticipated and countermeasures are prepared, but in reality, threats often appear in unexpected forms.
On this topic, Mo Ahddoud, who served in British artillery, shares his thoughts: “No plan survives first contact with the enemy. What matters most is adaptability and continuing the mission.” This mindset is exactly what's needed by cybersecurity professionals.
Within the cybersecurity field, so-called “blue teams” – which handle monitoring, incident response, and analysis – are areas where veterans excel. Their teamwork orientation, composure under pressure, and precision make them especially effective.
According to LT Harper agency director Catherine Burn, military veterans are finding their place in this field quickly and successfully: “Once an employer hires one veteran, they’re eager to hire another.” Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
