Another major diplomatic event has unfolded on the world political stage: the meeting between China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi and the European Union's chief diplomat in Brussels has captured the attention of the international community. At the meeting, Wang Yi openly stated that Beijing cannot accept Russia's defeat in Ukraine, and according to CNN, these words could create a new turn in the global political balance.
In his remarks, Wang Yi emphasized that if Russia emerges from this conflict with defeat, the full attention of the US will inevitably shift to China. While this statement contradicts China's official neutrality policy, it in fact demonstrates the priority of Beijing's geopolitical interests. According to EU Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas, Wang Yi's viewpoint indicates that China is more likely to support the continuation of the war in Ukraine.
During the four-hour negotiations, issues of cybersecurity, rare minerals, trade imbalance, Taiwan, and the Middle East were also discussed. However, it was the statements regarding Ukraine and Russia that remained in the focus of global media and analysts. The EU and the US are watching China's unique position with concern.
Beijing officials, however, maintain their stance despite international pressure. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that "Beijing's position on Ukraine is neutral and consistent," stressing the importance of negotiations and peace. Mao Ning also noted that the conflict serves no one's interests, and that they will continue constructive cooperation with the international community.
At the same time, the Chinese leadership is advancing a "no-limits" strategic partnership with Russia. Political and economic ties between the two countries continue to strengthen. Although Beijing denies accusations of providing military aid to Russia, Ukraine has imposed sanctions on certain Chinese companies. There are particularly serious allegations regarding the supply of drone components and assistance in missile production.
In today's geopolitical situation, this firm and interested position of China may play an important role in international solutions to the Ukrainian conflict. Behind Europe's and the US's concerns lies Beijing's emergence as an even more independent and influential power as the world's second largest economy.
Every new diplomatic negotiation, every geopolitical statement is reflected in the global balance and security system. There is no doubt that the conflict around Ukraine and China–Russia relations will remain some of the most important issues in world politics in the coming years. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
