Ryanair has increased the size of its free checked bags!
One of the most popular and low-cost airlines in Europe, Ryanair, is introducing an important update for its passengers in the coming weeks. The company is now increasing by 20% the size of what it calls a “personal item” (personal bag), which can be brought on board without any extra fee.

According to the new requirements, each passenger can carry for free a bag or laptop bag measuring 40cm x 30cm x 20cm and weighing up to 10kg. This bag must fit under the seat in front of the passenger inside the aircraft cabin. This provides significantly more space compared to the current size limit of 40cm x 25cm x 20cm.

Ryanair is taking this step in line with new standards being introduced by the European Union. The EU plans to set a minimum size for free hand luggage that carriers must accept. However, airlines are allowed to accept larger bags if they choose. Ryanair is using this opportunity to offer improved conditions for its passengers.

At the same time, competitor airlines like EasyJet already accept bags measuring 45cm x 36cm x 20cm, while Wizz Air accepts bags with the same dimensions as Ryanair's new limits: 40cm x 30cm x 20cm. British Airways (BA) allows two pieces of free hand luggage, one of which may weigh up to 23kg.

In addition, the European Parliament’s transport committee is working on another important decision. Under this proposal, each passenger could be entitled to one extra hand luggage item weighing up to 7kg. This rule still needs to be approved by the European Parliament, but it may offer even more convenience for travelers.

Unfortunately, in recent years, due to different rules enforced by various airlines, passengers have often faced confusion. A bag accepted by one airline might be rejected by another, leading to unexpected extra charges. That’s why unified standards will be a great relief for travelers throughout Europe.

Ryanair’s increase in bag size will certainly strengthen its competitiveness. Already, the allowed free bag size is one and a half times bigger than the new European minimum requirement. This means that passengers can easily carry belts, documents, and essential personal items.

We remind you to always check baggage rules on the airline’s website before any trip, as specific regulations and limitations may apply to each flight route.
