Not fiction or scientific fantasy — these pages are about reality and one of the most astonishing cosmic events in history. Sotheby’s auction house in New York has announced July’s most intriguing auction: on July 16, the largest meteorite confirmed to have broken off from Mars and reached Earth will be auctioned, reports bild.de.
Experts call this cosmic exhibit a real “treasure for collectors” — the meteorite named NWA 16788 weighs 25 kilograms, and its price at auction may rise to 4 million dollars. This stone, found in Niger in 2023, stands out not only for its weight but also for its excellent preservation. “This is not just a large stone — such a well-preserved and clearly sourced cosmic object is extremely rare,” reads Sotheby’s commentary.

According to scientists, NWA 16788 broke off from Mars as a result of a collision with one of the large asteroids billions of years ago. After a historic journey, it reached Earth, landed in one of Niger’s deserts, and was discovered by local finders in 2023. So far, about 400 meteorites of Martian origin have been identified around the world, most of them weighing only a few grams or even less. Therefore, NWA 16788 has become a real mystery and rare discovery for space science.
Sotheby’s representatives call this stone “a bridge between the history of Mars and Earth.” For collectors and meteorite enthusiasts, this auction can become not just a matter of material value, but an acquisition of a priceless find for science and history.
It remains a mystery how high the bidding will go on July 16 and which collection NWA 16788 will enter. One thing is certain: this meteorite from Mars will be recorded in history as another remarkable event. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
