In 2028, the city of Samarkand may host one of the world’s largest international space events — the International Astronautical Congress (IAC). If this plan is implemented, Uzbekistan will welcome leading representatives of the global space industry, research centers, major agencies, and startups.
Global significance of the event
According to reports, around 10,000 participants attend the IAC annually. These include representatives of international space agencies, research institutes, technology companies, and startups. In previous years, the congress has been hosted by Baku (2023), Milan (2024), Paris (2022), Dubai (2021), Washington (2019), Bremen (2018), and Adelaide (2017). For example, IAC-2022 in Paris strengthened France’s position as a leader in the global space industry, while the 2017 event in Adelaide led to the creation of the Australian Space Agency.
Uzbekistan’s candidacy and opportunities
Representatives of Uzcosmos have officially proposed to host the 2028 congress in Samarkand. If successful, this would open up significant opportunities for expanding international cooperation, joint research, and startup development. It would also attract foreign investors to build research centers, technology parks, and incubators in the country.
Preparation process
Christian Feichtinger, Executive Director of the International Astronautical Federation, visited Samarkand and Tashkent to assess infrastructure, material and technical resources, transport and hotel systems. He also evaluated safety measures and the potential for organizing social events.
Possibility of Elon Musk’s attendance
It is known that Elon Musk has participated in IAC multiple times as a special guest, presenting his successful space projects. If the congress takes place in Samarkand in 2028, there is a possibility he could attend in person — although this has not yet been officially confirmed.
