In St. Petersburg, the fight against weeds, particularly the dangerous hogweed, has reached a new level — artificial intelligence has now been involved. According to the State Administrative and Technical Inspection (GATI), the AI system has already identified eight violations, reports Pravilamag.
Before the project was launched, the neural network was specially trained to recognize hogweed. It memorized all stages of the plant’s growth and began detecting it in city areas and plots. Over the past week, all violations detected by AI were recorded on private lands — their owners had not removed the weeds. According to GATI, after the high efficiency of automatic detection was proven, the system was officially launched.
Currently, the city operates eight “Gorodovoy” mobile AI complexes. They monitor 186 routes daily. Detecting hogweed using neural networks usually takes 3–4 weeks.
Experts warn that the problem is serious — according to Skoltech’s estimates, by 2060 hogweed could occupy a significant part of Central Russia.
