French woman sued for taking money without working for 21 years

An unusual case occurred in France — a woman named Lourens van Vassenhou sued her employer, claiming she had received a salary for 21 years without actually going to work. The situation has drawn significant public attention.

It is reported that in 2002, Lourens was reassigned to a secretary position due to health reasons. Shortly after, the company moved her to a remote work arrangement without giving her real tasks. Despite this, she continued to receive her salary regularly.

According to her, this was not a privilege but a form of psychological torment. “Yes, I was paid, but they treated me as if I didn’t exist. Sitting at home doing nothing is very hard,” she told the court.

Vassenhou said that over 20 years of such isolation put her under severe mental pressure, which is why she is seeking moral damages from her employer.

The court has not yet issued a final decision. A verdict is expected in the coming weeks.
