According to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, by the end of 2024, more than a quarter of the country's employed population consisted of migrants and their descendants. According to official estimates, this figure is around 26% of the total workforce. In some industries, this share has reached almost half.
According to the analysis, migrants occupy an important place in the most labor-intensive sectors of the German economy. In particular, their share reached 60% in welding operations, 54% in food production and culinary services, 48% in the installation of construction equipment, 47% among public transport drivers, 46% in meat processing, and 45% in catering services.
The share of migrants is also significant in other large industries: in the production of plastics and rubber products - 44 percent, in the hotel and tourism sector - 40 percent, in freight transportation - 39 percent, in the production and processing of metal - 37 percent, in elderly care services - 33 percent.
In contrast, the number of migrants in government agencies and law enforcement is significantly lower. For example, their share in the police system is only 7 percent, and among ambulance and rescue service workers - 8 percent. In such professions as tax inspection, state and insurance institutions, primary school teachers, and lawyers, this figure is around 9-10 percent.
The data was collected on the basis of a comprehensive micro-survey conducted throughout the country in 2024. Approximately 1% of the population over 15 years of age participated in the survey. However, because the results did not include individuals living in dormitories and social housing, many refugees and temporary migrants were excluded from this statistic.
Experts emphasize that such a high proportion of migrants in the German economy is crucial for maintaining the balance of supply and demand in the country's labor market. Their contribution, especially in the spheres of industry, logistics, and services, contributes to the sustainable economic growth of Germany.
At the same time, analysts emphasize the need to increase the activity of migrants in the public services system, to introduce special educational and qualification programs for them. This will allow for further diversification of the labor market in the country and strengthening social integration.
