On November 19, 2025, Spain and Turkey faced off in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification stage. Spain came from behind twice to secure a draw and maintain their lead at the top of the group standings.
At the start of the match, Spain dominated possession and controlled the field. The hosts frequently launched attacks down the flanks.
In the 6th minute, Marc Cucurella delivered a cross from the left wing, Fabian Ruiz directed it further to Dani Olmo, who scored with a precise shot to open the scoring. Spain maintained their momentum following the goal.
However, Turkey gradually brought balance to the game and began counterattacking. By the end of the first half, Turkey increased their pressure through set-piece opportunities.
Following a corner kick, Yilmaz delivered a pass into the penalty area, and Gül struck from close range to equalize. In the second half, Turkey played with increased pace.
Under Vincenzo Montella’s guidance, the Turkish side executed effective plays from the flanks and between the lines. In the 55th minute, Kadioglu sent a cross from the left side, Kokcü controlled the ball on his chest and set up Özcan, who delivered a precise low shot into the bottom corner to give Turkey the lead.
Spain responded with intense pressure. The hosts shifted the game entirely to Turkey’s half and made several adjustments in their attacking lineup.
This paid off: in the 62nd minute, Cucurella provided another cross from the left, and after a deflection, the ball reached Oyarzabal, who calmly slotted it into the net to equalize. Both teams went on to create several dangerous chances in the remaining time, but Spain’s Unai Simon and Turkey’s Altay Bayindir made crucial saves to ensure the match ended in a draw.
In the end, the draw satisfied both teams. Spain remained at the top of the group with 16 points, while Turkey secured second place and advanced to the play-off stage.
