It has been identified that the individual who opened fire on two National Guard soldiers in central Washington is 29-year-old Rahmonullah Lakanwal. He was injured during the shooting and subsequently arrested.
The incident occurred shortly before Thanksgiving Day, just a few blocks away from the White House. Both soldiers are in critical condition and remain hospitalized.
Lakanwal arrived in the United States in 2021 through a relocation program designed for individuals who cooperated with Afghan forces. According to his relatives, he previously served in the Afghan army and had recently been working at Amazon.
He had no prior criminal record. Following the attack, U.S. President Donald Trump, in a video address, described the incident as an act of "malice and terrorism."
Additionally, his administration announced a review of all background checks for Afghans who entered the country during the Joe Biden presidency. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services also declared a temporary suspension of processing all pending applications from Afghan nationals.
The shooting occurred while National Guard soldiers were patrolling the capital. Police reported the attack was carried out in an "ambush" manner and that the assailant acted alone.
Following the start of the shooting, the White House was placed under a brief heightened security protocol.
