Russia Threatens to Completely Block WhatsApp

Russia threatens complete WhatsApp ban
Russia's communications and information technology regulator, Roskomnadzor, has announced the gradual restriction of access to WhatsApp in the country. According to the organization, the messaging platform is being used for coordinating terrorist attacks, recruiting criminals, conducting fraud, and committing other crimes against Russian citizens.

The regulator emphasized that the restrictions would be implemented gradually, allowing users to transition to alternative services. If WhatsApp does not comply with Russian legal requirements, its operations could be completely halted.

Complaints regarding difficulties in sending messages on WhatsApp began to surface in late November. Earlier this year, in the summer, Roskomnadzor had taken measures to restrict voice calls on WhatsApp and Telegram.

The organization explained that criminals have increasingly utilized these messengers for fraudulent calls and attempts to recruit Russians. Additionally, Russia's Ministry of Digital Development stated that limiting voice calls on foreign messengers helps reduce the number of fraudulent calls and enhances communication security.

Despite the restrictions, WhatsApp remains the most popular messenger in Russia. As of August 2025, its monthly user base stood at 97 million, with 82.1 million daily users.
