Phuket speedboat crash: Uzbek tourists also injured

Uzbekistan’s Foreign Ministry press service commented on reports that a speedboat crashed off Thailand’s Phuket Island and that Uzbek nationals were among those injured, releasing official details.

The incident reportedly occurred on January 11. A speedboat heading from Phuket to Phi Phi Island collided with a fishing vessel. In addition to Uzbek citizens, tourists from Russia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan were on board.

According to the Foreign Ministry, there were three Uzbek citizens on the boat. As a result of the collision, two of them sustained minor injuries and were admitted to a local hospital. The injured later fully recovered and were discharged in accordance with procedure.

The official statement also noted that all medical and other necessary expenses were fully covered by the insurance of the company that owns the boat.

It was noted that Uzbekistan’s Consulate General in Bangkok remained in constant contact with local law enforcement agencies and healthcare institutions regarding the incident.

Russia’s Consulate General in Phuket reported that an 18-year-old Russian citizen died as a result of the incident, and 23 other Russian tourists were injured to varying degrees.

Overall, while the speedboat crash was a serious incident, officials confirmed that assistance to Uzbek citizens was provided promptly and they have recovered.
