Judges Who Freed Akmal Shukurov Detained in Tashkent

Three judges of the Tashkent City Court who heard Akmal Shukurov’s appeal case have been detained. They previously drew public attention after issuing a decision that released Shukurov, who had been convicted of brutally beating a man in a brawl near The Tower Hotel. This was reported by podrobno.uz. reports .

According to human rights defender Abdurahmon Tashanov, a criminal case has been opened against the judges under Article 231 of the Criminal Code—issuing an unlawful verdict, decision, or ruling. The detention was carried out as part of investigative actions.

The point is that in December last year, these judges, serving on the appellate panel, replaced Shukurov’s 8-year prison sentence with a restriction of liberty and released him прямо from the courtroom. The decision sparked major public outrage because the victim had been in a coma for a long time after the incident.

Later, after intervention by the прокуратура and the Supreme Judicial Council, the judges’ powers were terminated early for грубые violations of legality. Shukurov was ultimately sent back to prison for a term of 6 years.
