Armenia voices discontent over Russia’s military statements

Russia’s ambassador to Armenia, Sergey Kopyrkin, was summoned to Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The move followed Vladimir Solovyov’s remarks about the possibility of a military operation in the country.

A few days earlier, the propagandist said on air that Russia, as the United States did in Venezuela, should consider the option of interfering in the internal affairs of Central Asian states and Armenia “without violating international law” to prevent them from leaving Russia’s sphere of influence. He argued that “events in Armenia would be even more painful than in Venezuela. Losing Armenia would be a major problem.”

Armenia’s Foreign Ministry handed the Russian ambassador a note expressing deep dissatisfaction with the statements aired on a state TV channel. The ministry said such remarks do not align with friendly cooperation between Moscow and Yerevan.

At the same time, the two countries are officially considered close allies: Russia and Armenia are members of the CSTO and the Customs Union. However, in practice, amid the conflict with Azerbaijan, Russia has refrained from supporting Armenia. This is pushing Yerevan to seek closer cooperation with the United States and the European Union.

It is worth noting that Russian TV broadcasts regularly criticize Armenia’s government and the political moves of Nikol Pashinyan. Therefore, the situation shows that political relations and international alliances in the region remain complex.
