According to new research, having a pet — especially a dog or a cat — helps to preserve brain function in humans for a longer time. This provides an opportunity to slow down cognitive decline (dementia) during the aging process.
Swiss researcher Adriana Rostekova analyzed data from thousands of people over the age of 50 over a period of 18 years. According to her, dog owners maintained memory better, while cat owners preserved their verbal abilities for a longer time.
However, pets like fish and birds did not show the same effect. Scientists explain this by the lower level of interaction and emotional bonding with such animals.
In addition, walking with dogs and interacting with cats enhances a person’s social connections, which in turn helps keep the brain active.
Experts believe that pets are not only companions but also a useful factor for healthy aging. If your lifestyle and conditions allow for keeping a pet, it may be a positive investment in your health. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
