Despite all medically proven risks, cigarette smoking is once again becoming popular. Through fashion, show business, and social media, this harmful habit is attracting more and more people, reports Peopletalk.
At the recent wedding ceremony of British singer Charli XCX, guests were offered slim cigarettes on silver trays. At the Paris event for the Khy brand (owned by Kylie Jenner), waiters also welcomed guests with cigarettes and branded matches.
Singers Lorde and Addison Rae mention smoking in their recent songs. Sabrina Carpenter uses a fork instead of a cigarette in her Manchild music video. Even in the film Materialistka featuring actress Dakota Johnson, cigarettes frequently appear on screen. And in the latest season of The Bear, even the non-smoking character Sydney tries to light a cigarette.
Jared Oviatt, author of the Instagram page Cigfluencers, describes cigarettes as follows:
“They’re like blue jeans – they’ve survived every fashion trend. Concepts like stability, owning a home, and financial security have become dreams for many. So people start to ask: ‘Why shouldn’t I live the way I want? Why not smoke? Nothing matters anyway!”
Through this idea, he points to a shift in the psychological state of a hopeless and tired generation. In this context, the cigarette is not just about nicotine addiction, but also a symbol of inner emptiness and dependency.
At the same time, doctors and health organizations continue to regularly warn about the serious consequences of smoking: lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases, premature skin aging, complications during pregnancy, and many other risks.
In Uzbekistan, there are also legal restrictions and public campaigns promoting a healthy lifestyle and fighting against smoking. However, some young people still perceive smoking as a symbol of fashion or freedom.
