Early in the match, Monaco goalkeeper Lukáš Hrádecký could not continue after a collision, and Philipp Köhn was brought on immediately. The hosts won more corners, but their attacks initially lacked the expected sharpness.
The scoring opened in the 38th minute: after a corner delivery, Pavel Schultz finished the move to put Lyon ahead. Near the end of the first half, Monaco responded—amid a scramble in front of goal, Mamadou Koulibaly tapped the ball into an empty net to level the score.
After the break, Monaco increased the pressure again through set pieces. Following a corner, it seemed Thilo Kehrer had scored, but the referee disallowed the goal for a foul.
Soon after, Lyon capitalized on a mistake on the wing to go in front again: Schultz fired a precise shot from outside the box to complete his brace. In the following minutes, the game became more intense and physical.
In the 70th minute, Koulibaly received a straight red card for a dangerous challenge, leaving Monaco with ten men. Shortly after, Abner Vinícius finished Lyon’s attack to make it 3–1. Paul Pogba was also left out of Monaco’s matchday squad.
