Tim Cain explained why Troika’s RPGs had so many bugs

Tim Cain, co-creator of the original Fallout and founder of Troika Games, explained why the studio’s RPGs—Arcanum, Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines, and The Temple of Elemental Evil—shipped with so many bugs. According to him, even though there was enough experience, the process itself caused the problems. playground.ru reportsreports.

Cain points to the small team’s “overly creative enthusiasm” as the key factor. As a result, developers rushed to add a large number of complex gameplay mechanics but didn’t have time to properly test and tune them.

Another issue made things worse: the internal tools used to build these mechanics were themselves buggy and unfinished. The broad feature set led to unexpected “collisions” between systems, creating new malfunctions.

The designer admits the team bears responsibility for this situation, while also noting that complex RPGs in general often launch with technical issues.

Still, Troika’s legacy lives on: their projects are remembered for depth and an unconventional approach. Even decades later, fans keep supporting and improving the games with patches and mods—turning these titles into cult classics.
