Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck's AI Startup

Netflix has acquired InterPositive, an artificial intelligence startup co-founded by actor Ben Affleck that assists filmmakers with editing footage during post-production. Reports Techcrunch.com.

The deal could be worth as much as 600 million dollars according to sources cited by Bloomberg making it one of the streaming service's biggest purchases ever. Netflix's largest acquisition to date was the Roald Dahl Story Company for around 700 million dollars.

While Netflix has not confirmed the exact amount reports suggest the initial cash payment may be lower with InterPositive owners eligible for extra payouts based on performance targets.

InterPositive develops tools that help filmmakers fix continuity problems and improve scenes more efficiently. The technology does not create new content or use footage without permission.

This move aligns with Netflix's efforts to bring artificial intelligence into content creation. The company has already applied generative AI in productions such as creating a building collapse scene for the Argentine series The Eternaut.

Competing streamers are also exploring AI. Amazon is developing internal AI teams for film and television while Disney has partnered with OpenAI. However many film industry workers worry about job losses and whether creators are fairly compensated for data used in training AI models.
