Cowboy Space raises $275 million for space data centers

The surge in demand for artificial intelligence technologies is leading entrepreneurs to the idea of using space as data centers. However, there is a major problem in this field: there is a shortage of rockets to deploy orbital data centers, and they are very expensive. For now, most companies are pinning their hopes on the SpaceX Starship rocket, but its commercial deployment may take a long time. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reports .
Cowboy Space Corporation decided to develop its own rocket program to solve this problem. The company raised $275 million in a Series B funding round led by Index Ventures, valuing it at $2 billion. Founded by Baiju Bhatt, one of the co-founders of Robinhood, the startup plans to conduct its first flight by the end of 2028.
Initially founded as Aetherflux, the company aimed to collect solar energy in space and beam it to Earth. However, the idea of orbital data centers and the shortage of available launch vehicles forced the company to create its own rocket program. According to Bhatt, existing rocket providers often prioritize their own payloads, which limits opportunities for external customers.
Developing one's own rocket is a highly complex and risky process. Currently, only a few companies in the West, such as SpaceX, Rocket Lab, and Arianespace, successfully launch commercial rockets. With this step, Cowboy Space Corporation is entering into direct competition with industry giants like SpaceX and Blue Origin.
