Israel has announced its withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), a day after the United States made a similar decision. The country's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced this on his social media page.

According to Saar, Israel welcomes US President Donald Trump's decision not to participate in the work of the UN Human Rights Council. "The UN HRC has traditionally protected human rights violators, allowing them to hide from scrutiny, and instead condemns the only democracy in the Middle East - Israel. Israel will no longer accept such discrimination!" - said Saar.

According to him, Israel has been the subject of more than 100 condemnatory resolutions. This is more than 20 percent of all resolutions adopted by the council and more than the resolutions adopted against Iran, Cuba, North Korea and Venezuela, Saar clarified. Earlier, the Israeli government has repeatedly criticized the activities of the UN Human Rights Council, and after one of the council's resolutions, the country's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote that the organization "has a bias against Israel."

On February 4, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to withdraw from the UN Human Rights Council.

The Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body within the UN system, which includes 47 states. It was established by the UN General Assembly in 2006 to "promote respect for and protection of human rights worldwide." At that time, the US president was George W. Bush, but the country joined the council in 2009 - under Barack Obama.
