Meta has announced plans to lay a 50,000-kilometer submarine cable around the world, the BBC reports.

The technology giant said the Waterworth project would connect the United States, India, South Africa, Brazil and other regions. It is expected to be the longest submarine cable in history.

It is noted that in addition to social networks, Meta is also trying to expand its presence in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and the infrastructure that supports it. According to the company, its new cable will connect five continents and help develop projects in the field of AI.

“The project will allow for the expansion of economic cooperation, promote the spread of digital technologies and open up opportunities for technological development in these regions,” the corporation said in a statement.

The project was announced in December last year. At that time, it was estimated that the company would require an investment of $ 10 billion to implement its plan.

Meta is also involved in other projects for laying Internet cables, including Echo and Bifrost, Havhingsten, Amite and Anjana. In addition, the company is currently the main owner of the world's longest cable system - 2Africa. In January, Meta announced that it would lay the ORCA Internet cable connecting Taiwan and the United States.
