Since the start of the large-scale military invasion by the Russian Federation into Ukraine, at least 121,507 Russian soldiers have been confirmed killed in the conflict. This was reported by "Mediazona" and the BBC Russian Service in collaboration with a team of volunteers, based on verified data. The most recent update was published on Friday, August 1. Since July 18 alone, an additional 2,353 names have been identified from open sources.
According to statistics presented on Mediazona's website, the highest number of casualties came from Bashkortostan (5,889), Tatarstan (5,565), Yekaterinburg (4,377), and Chelyabinsk (3,649). Among them, 27.3% (33,152 people) were volunteers, 14.8% (17,964) were prisoners recruited from penal colonies, and 11% (13,356) were mobilized citizens.
In terms of age groups, the highest numbers were from the 30–32 (10,366), 33–35 (11,794), 36–38 (11,614), and 39–41 (10,625) age brackets. Additionally, 5,432 officers from the Russian army and other security forces, including 12 generals, have been confirmed killed in Ukraine.
Journalists emphasize that the actual death toll may be even higher, as not all reports of military deaths are made public or appear in open sources.
On July 14, 2024, during a meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that since the beginning of 2025, the Russian army had lost over 100,000 soldiers in Ukraine. In April, NATO reported that 250,000 had been killed and 650,000 wounded from the Russian side.
