Chlorinated water may increase cancer risk
Chlorinated drinking water, meeting EU and US standards, may increase the risk of certain oncological diseases. The Guardian reported this, citing research by Swedish scientists.

When chlorine is added to water, byproducts known as trihalomethanes are formed in almost all public water supply systems. While this disinfection method is cost-effective and efficient, it is not without risks. Studies indicate that consuming chlorinated water increases the likelihood of bladder cancer by 33% and colorectal cancer by 15%.

According to Emily Hölt, lead researcher at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute, further studies are needed for a more precise assessment of these risks. She also noted that alternative water purification methods, such as ultraviolet treatment or advanced filtration systems, could reduce cancer risks, although they are significantly more expensive.

The Guardian highlights that chlorination has been widely used since the early 20th century, preventing the spread of numerous infectious diseases. However, in the 1970s, scientists discovered that chlorine’s interaction with organic compounds leads to the formation of hundreds of hazardous toxins, including chloroform and bromoform.
