In modern medicine, the importance of sleep has once again become the focus of major scientific analysis. A new study conducted by scientists at Canada’s Sunnybrook Medical Center, published in the journal “Brain”, showed a strong link between sleep and brain health among the elderly. In the experiment led by neurologist Andrew Lim, more than 600 older people were monitored for their sleep for several years using a special device.
Study participants wore a device on their heads similar to a smartwatch, and all physiological changes during sleep were recorded. In addition, they agreed to donate their brains to science after death free of charge, which gave scientists the opportunity to study the tissues in depth.
The interesting conclusion is that people who have sleep problems — frequent awakenings at night, inability to sleep deeply, and insomnia — have a significantly reduced number of pericytes surrounding the brain blood vessels. These very cells ensure that nutrients, oxygen, and other necessary substances reach the brain and guarantee blood flow. When pericytes decrease, blood circulation in the brain slows down, and as a result, functions such as memory, attention, and thinking decrease.
Previously, scientists thought that insomnia was a result of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. However, these scientific works have shown that disturbances in sleep itself — especially constant insomnia, frequent awakenings, and lack of deep sleep — are one of the causes of dementia.
Researchers especially recommend paying attention to improving sleep quality. Because proper and full sleep not only restores the body, but also helps to maintain brain health and protect against dementia.
Scientists came to the following conclusion: “When a person sleeps, their brain recovers. If a problem occurs in this process, all activity gradually goes off track.”
These results are a call to recognize the real value of sleep for both older generations and young people. Improving sleep routines and striving for restful and full sleep in daily life can prevent even major problems. Attention to the brain means attention to life.
