According to the updated list published by the American Forbes magazine on April 1, the number of dollar billionaires among Russian citizens has reached a new record over the past year. Russia ranks fifth in the world in this regard.

According to Forbes, the number of dollar billionaires in Russia has increased from 120 to 140 people in a year, and their total wealth has increased from $537 billion to $580 billion. The Russian version of Forbes notes that in 2025, the number of dollar billionaires in Russia will reach 146 people, with a total wealth of $ 625.5 billion. These figures also surpass the record results of 2021.

Russia's place in the list of billionaires in the world

The current Forbes list includes a total of 3,028 people. The United States (902), China (516), India (205) and Germany (171) are leading in terms of the number of billionaires. Russia, however, took fifth place and entered the list of countries that have increased the number of its wealthy.

The richest Russians

The highest place among the richest people in Russia is occupied by Vagit Alekperov, the founder of Lukoil. His fortune has reached $ 28.7 billion. He is followed by the heads of Severstal and Novatek, Alexei Mordashov ($28.6 billion) and Leonid Mikhelson ($28.4 billion).

Sanctions and the lives of Russian billionaires abroad

According to Forbes Russia, in 2022, the strengthening of Western sanctions due to the war in Ukraine led to a sharp decrease in the number of Russian billionaires and their total wealth. However, over the past two years, these indicators have grown again, reaching record levels.

At the same time, 14 of the 20 richest citizens of Russia are subject to Western sanctions. Many billionaires live outside Russia. For example, Andrei Melnichenko lives in the UAE, Mikhail Prokhorov in Switzerland, Petr Aven in Latvia, and Elena Baturina in the UK.

This situation indicates that the processes in the Russian economy are developing despite international influences. However, sanctions and geopolitical uncertainties are creating new challenges for Russian businesses.
