The new tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump in 2024 caused a huge stir in the international arena. According to his decision, a 10 percent customs duty will be imposed on goods imported from all countries. For some countries, this figure is significantly higher: for example, 34 percent for China, 20 percent for the European Union, 24 percent for Japan, and 26 percent for India.
European Union reaction
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the decision as a “serious blow to the global economy.” She said in her speech at the EU-Central Asia summit in Samarkand:
“President Trump’s imposition of tariffs on the entire world, including the European Union, is a serious blow to the global economy. Uncertainty will increase and protectionism will increase. The consequences will be terrible for millions of people around the world. It will be felt immediately. Millions of citizens will face higher food bills. Medicines and transport will become more expensive. Inflation will increase.”
The European Union has warned that it will take countermeasures if the US does not come to negotiations on these tariffs.
Irish Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris said the EU should remain calm and restrained in its response and stressed that it would seek a negotiated solution. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called Trump’s tariff decision “wrong” and promised to use all means to avoid a trade war.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson:
“We do not want more trade barriers. We do not want a trade war. It will make our people poorer and the world more dangerous in the long term.”
Relations between France and Germany
French President Emmanuel Macron announced that he would receive business leaders at the Elysee Palace to consult on this issue. This indicates France's intention to review its relations with the United States.
Relations between Asian countries
In a statement, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce strongly condemned Trump's decision and announced that it would take countermeasures to protect its rights and interests:
"There are no winners in trade and tariff wars, and protectionism is not a solution. The United States should correct its wrongdoings and resolve trade disputes with all countries, including China, through consultations on the basis of equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit."
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said:
"The current measures of the US government and other large-scale trade restrictions will have a significant impact on economic relations between Japan and the United States, as well as on the global economy and the multilateral trading system."
South Korean Acting President Han Deok-soo also expressed deep concern about the new tariffs, stressing that the government should use all its resources to resolve the trade crisis.
Australia-Canada relations
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese opposed such a US policy:
"Friends do not do this. Tariffs make no sense and are contrary to the principles of partnership between our two countries."
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, however, said he would not sit idly by and fight against these tariffs:
"We will protect our workers and build the strongest economy in the G7."
Russia and other countries
Trump's order did not mention Russia by name because Russia is already under US sanctions. White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said:
"The sanctions imposed on Russia have already significantly prevented trade."
In 2024, the volume of trade between Russia and the United States amounted to $ 3.5 billion, which is the lowest figure since 1992. Cuba, Belarus and the DPRK were also not affected by these tariffs, as the current US sanctions against these countries are very strict.
Trump's new tariffs have caused a great stir in the international community. Many countries perceive this as a threat to their economies and intend to take retaliatory measures. Countries such as the European Union, China, Japan, South Korea, Canada and Australia are seeking to negotiate with the United States. At the same time, global economic relations and the trade order are undergoing a serious test. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
