Many people are familiar with the habit of "cracking" fingers. Some do it just for pleasure, while others are afraid: supposedly this habit damages bones and joints. However, according to physiotherapist Raul Valdesuso, cracking fingers is completely harmless for a healthy person, writes Peopletalk.

Where does the cracking come from?
In a conversation with Spanish journalists, Valdesuso explains that the "crack" or popping sound is not directly related to bone or joint friction. In fact, this sound occurs due to the bursting of gas bubbles inside the joint capsule. That is, it is a physiological, natural process. If there is no pain or swelling — there is no reason to worry.

When should you be cautious?
At the same time, the specialist emphasizes: if a person already has joint diseases, it is better to give up this habit. In particular:

  • if the crack is accompanied by pain;

  • if swelling or limited movement in the hand appears.

These signs may indicate an inflammatory process in the joint. In such cases, it is recommended not to make changes on your own, but to consult a rheumatologist or orthopedist.

Are there psychological reasons?
Doctors also draw attention to another point — cracking is often linked to psychological state. For example, in a state of stress or anxiety, people may unconsciously perform such actions. This manifests as a kind of "emotional discharge".

That’s why doctors recommend not turning it into a constant habit. In such cases, calmness can be achieved through breathing exercises, concentration (meditation), or light physical activity.
