Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, in a conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, proposed constructing a second nuclear power plant (NPP) on the country’s territory. According to him, this project could be implemented to supply electricity to Ukrainian territories under Russian control. The transcript of the meeting was published on the Kremlin’s website on September 26.
Lukashenko explained that the new plant could be built in the eastern part of Belarus. He emphasized that in this way, electricity could be delivered to Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk, and Donetsk regions, which Russia considers its own.
“Rosatom has already developed possibilities for expanding nuclear energy. I would not like to discuss financial matters publicly, but we have different options. If a decision is made and the need arises, we can immediately begin constructing a new unit or an entire plant,” Lukashenko said.
The Russian president reacted cautiously to the proposal: “If there is a consumer who will take the electricity and pay the required tariff, then this is not a problem at all,” Putin said.
