Hot climate is becoming an increasing problem worldwide. Cities heat up faster, and this poses a serious threat to people’s health. While many countries are developing plans to create shade, Singapore has already taken the lead in this area.
In this country, covered pedestrian walkways and green spaces have long been part of the city plan. After independence, Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew made the expansion of shaded areas and the increase of greenery a main condition of urban development.
Today, Singapore has more than 200 km of covered walkways. The number of trees has increased tenfold in 40 years. This has had a positive effect on people’s health and quality of life.
According to experts, Singapore’s experience shows that with strict planning and government support, even cities in hot climates can be turned into cool and comfortable places.
