US President Donald Trump said Greenland is “necessary” for the United States, stressing that otherwise the island could fall under Chinese or Russian control. He made the remarks during a meeting with representatives of oil companies. This was reported by kursiv.uz. reports .
According to Trump, Washington will take “some action” on the Greenland issue, and it will proceed regardless of whether the island’s residents like it or not. In his statement, the president noted that if the US does not take such a step, Russia or China could seize Greenland, creating a strategically unfavorable neighborhood for the United States.
In Trump’s view, despite the presence of US military bases on the island under the 1951 agreement, the United States should acquire Greenland. In the US, various ways to strengthen control over Greenland have been discussed before: from military options to ideas of offering one-time payments to island residents to persuade them to break away from Denmark and possibly join the US.
Trump’s latest statements about adding Greenland to the US triggered a negative reaction within NATO. Some alliance members said such matters can only be decided by Copenhagen and the island’s own administration.
At the same time, Greenland’s residents also do not support the initiative to join the US. According to polls, 85% of Greenlanders oppose the idea.
