Donald Trump demands changes to election laws

US President Donald Trump has taken another bold step in the country's political arena. He openly declared that he would not sign any other bill until the Senate approves the “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act,” or the SAVE Act. The White House leader announced this statement via the Truth Social social network, expressing his firm stance. Trump emphasized that this bill should be the “gold standard” for the US election system and that no compromises would be allowed.

According to the President's demands, every voter must provide documents verifying their identity and citizenship. He also opposed mail-in ballots, noting that exceptions could only be made for military personnel, illness, or disability. This initiative has intensified political struggle ahead of the 2026 US midterm elections. According to The Hill, Trump is attempting to introduce these rules under the guise of mobilizing his supporters and ensuring transparency in election processes.

Complicating the situation is the fact that Trump has appealed to Senate Republican Leader John Thune to bypass the “filibuster” tactic in passing the bill. Usually, 60 votes are required to pass a law in the Senate, but Trump believes Republicans can pass this document with 51 votes. This brings the confrontation between Democrats and Republicans to a new level. Democratic Party representatives are concerned that this bill would limit the voting rights of ordinary citizens and create artificial barriers in the election process.

The SAVE Act was approved by the House of Representatives in February and has strong support among Republicans. However, Democrats argue that this bill would make voter registration difficult and hinder voting, especially for low-income groups. The midterm elections in the fall of 2026 are crucial for both parties. While Democrats hope to regain control of the House, Republicans are using all means to maintain their current advantage. In US political history, midterm elections are often difficult for the incumbent government, making Trump's firm move strategically significant.
