Kazakhstan: Heavy rainfall causes 550 livestock deaths in 2 days

Livestock breeders in the Qoraoʻyen district of Kazakhstan's Mangystau region are concerned about the mass death of their animals. According to local residents, the main cause of this tragedy is the continuous heavy downpour, which turned pastures into swamps and mud. The news outlet 'Lada.kz' reported this.
Loss of over 550 animals in two days
The numbers show that the natural phenomenon has taken away a large amount of farmers' wealth in a very short time.
- April 20: A total of 237 livestock, including over 100 horses and more than a hundred small ruminants (sheep and goats), died.
- April 21: Losses increased further, with 316 animals perishing. The majority were horses, with sheep and goats making up the rest.
In total, over 550 livestock died in the district in just two days, and sadly, nearly half of them were valuable horses.
Currently, local government bodies and production sectors in the Qoraoʻyen district are collaborating, deploying special machinery to address the consequences of land erosion and waterlogging.
'The process of recording the exact number of deceased livestock and formalizing the relevant reports is actively underway,' stated the local administration.
Will the damage be compensated?
It is reported that once all documents are processed and the animals are identified via their special chips, the process of their disposal will begin in conjunction with veterinary service staff. The issue of compensating farmers for the material damage incurred will be considered based on current legislative requirements.
