Another worrying incident has been recorded in Colombia, South America — a newly completed bridge unexpectedly collapsed during its opening ceremony. The incident reportedly occurred in the municipality of Bagado, within the Choco department.
According to information disseminated by the Need To Know portal, the event took place on April 19 during a ceremonial opening. The pedestrian bridge was 85 meters long and was intended to provide local residents with convenient access from the town center to the village of San Marino.
During the ceremony, as city leaders and representatives of the public began crossing the new structure, the bridge started to shake violently. Shortly thereafter, the ropes holding it snapped, and the entire construction collapsed into the river. All individuals on the bridge fell into the water.
According to initial reports, eight citizens sustained injuries of varying degrees as a result of the incident, with three of them being hospitalized. Most importantly, no fatalities have been recorded.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described the event with great surprise and shock. The head of the local government also commented on the incident, stating that serious attention had been paid to the construction quality, but admitting that such an outcome was unexpected.
"I am neither an engineer nor a foreman, and I don't understand materials well, but I definitely demanded that this construction be of good quality. Thank God everyone is alive, but eight people are injured," said the mayor of Serna after the incident.
Currently, relevant organizations are thoroughly investigating the causes of the incident. The company that built the bridge has also been involved in the investigation. Initial assumptions suggest that the structure may not have been able to withstand the load of a large number of people simultaneously.
This incident once again highlighted the importance of construction quality and adherence to safety requirements. Now, the public is raising a question: why did the newly built bridge fail the test so quickly?
