Turkey introduces social media restrictions for children

A significant law aimed at protecting children and adolescents in the online environment has been adopted in Turkey. According to the new regulations, users under the age of 15 are prohibited from using social media networks. This was reported by the international news agency Reuters.

In accordance with the requirements of the law, all online platforms are mandated to implement strict measures for identifying and verifying the age of users. This means that registering by concealing one's age or entering false information will now become significantly more difficult. These measures are expected to serve in protecting children from harmful information.

The innovation is not limited to social networks alone. Gaming platforms will also be subject to these requirements. They must classify games according to age categories and grant access to users based on relevant restrictions. This will strengthen protection against content that is unsuitable for children.

Furthermore, according to the law, large platforms with a high number of users are required to open an official representative office within Turkey. This requirement allows for increased state supervision and the ability to respond promptly to violations of the law.

As previously reported by the Yeni Şafak publication, the government began working on additional measures following several negative incidents involving children and teenagers in the country. In particular, there are plans to introduce special SIM cards for children. Such SIM cards will be equipped with special filters that automatically block harmful and inappropriate content.

In addition, officials are considering restricting VPN services and further tightening the rules for internet use for individuals under the age of 18.

In short, this decision adopted in Turkey is seen as a significant step toward ensuring digital security, particularly in protecting the younger generation from harmful information. It is possible that such measures may serve as a model for other countries in the future.
