Tesla уступs to BYD: who leads EV sales in 2025

By the end of 2025, Elon Musk’s Tesla lost its status as the world’s largest electric-vehicle seller. According to Trading Review, the company handed the lead to China’s BYD corporation. This was reported by kursiv.uz.reports.

Tesla’s quarterly and annual delivery figures came in below the level the company itself had expected. This increased pressure on the automaker’s shares.

In the fourth quarter of 2025, Tesla delivered 418.2 thousand EVs to global markets—16% less than in the same period a year earlier. The result also fell short of the company’s consensus forecast.

Over the year, Tesla deliveries declined by 8.6% to 1.64 million units. BYD, meanwhile, maintained growth: in 2025 the company sold 2.26 million EVs, with positive dynamics recorded both in Q4 and for the full year. However, it is noted that BYD’s growth rate slowed to its weakest level in the past five years.

On the first trading day of 2026 in New York, Tesla shares opened higher at the start of the session, but after delivery data were released and amid intensifying competition in the global EV market, they moved into negative territory during trading.
