Cleanliness and hygiene in the kitchen are very important for every housewife. Among the cleaning products used in washing dishes, sponges are one of the most commonly used items. However, recently, experts have been drawing attention to the harmful effects of using sponges and warning about their impact on our health.
Is a dishwashing sponge really as safe as we think? How should this tool be used to ensure hygiene in the kitchen? We will look into the topic in more depth, seeking answers to such questions.
Using a sponge to wash dishes is dangerous for health, says Trond Møretro, a researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Food Research. According to him, harmful bacteria from the sponge spread to the surface of the dishes during washing. Even if your dish looks clean, it can harbor a lot of bacteria. Because sponges are rarely kept dry, they are used every day, and in a humid environment, various fungi and bacteria grow. Therefore, they become a favorable environment for the reproduction of dangerous compounds that can even cause salmonellosis, writes the Mirror.
“A single sponge can harbor more bacteria than the entire population of the world, because the food particles left on it are a source of food for the bacteria,” says Trond.
Even constantly cleaning the sponge does not significantly reduce the risk, the only way to maintain complete hygiene is to change the sponge every day. However, this method is not economical and environmentally friendly.
So, what should you use to clean dishes?
The scientist recommends using a special brush for washing dishes. Because it removes food residue well, the bristles of the brush dry very quickly, and harmful bacteria are also killed. In addition, most brushes have handles that prevent direct contact with harmful bacteria on the hands.
