Sitting still in one place for a long time has once again been proven to be very dangerous for human health. According to a new study published in the journal “JAMA Network Open”, prolonged sitting during working hours significantly increases the risk of all-cause mortality, especially those related to cardiovascular diseases, zamin.uz reported.
Researchers from Taipei Medical University conducted a large-scale observation involving more than 481,000 adults. The participants were monitored for nearly 12 years: they regularly provided information about their medical history, daily habits, and lifestyle.
The results showed that 60 percent of people spent most of their working day sitting, 29 percent alternated between sitting and standing, and 10 percent almost never sat.
Over the 12-year period, more than 26,000 deaths were recorded, and half of these occurred among the group that spent more time sitting. In addition, those who sat for long periods had a 16 percent higher risk of all-cause mortality and a 34 percent higher risk of death from cardiovascular diseases.
Experts emphasized that the risk is especially higher among people over 60 years old, smokers, and those with chronic illnesses.
According to the researchers, alternating between sitting and movement during work, taking short breaks, and increasing daily physical activity can help reduce this serious risk.
