Previously seen as a problem only in the seas and oceans, plastic pollution has now reached the human body. Scientific studies are not just alarming - they show that microplastics can be found in your blood vessels.
What is the connection between plastic and stroke?
A study conducted by scientists at the University of New Mexico found that patients who had suffered a stroke had 51 times more micro- and nanoplastic particles in their carotid arteries. This means that the presence of plastic in blood vessels may be a significant risk factor for stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. Even in people without symptoms of atherosclerosis, this figure was 16 times higher.
New research shows that people with microplastics in their arteries were twice as likely to have a stroke, heart attack or even death over a three-year follow-up.
How does plastic affect?
When plastic particles are present in the arteries, the activity of immune cells is impaired, and the anti-inflammatory defense system is weakened. This has a serious impact on the overall health of the body, especially the cardiovascular system.
Plastic is not only found in the blood vessels
According to a report published by the AJMS (American Society of Medical Journalists), microplastics have been detected not only in the blood vessels, but also in the lungs, brain, placenta, heart and even breast milk. It can enter the body through breathing, food and even drinking water.
The problem is very serious. What should be done?
Although scientists have not yet been able to confirm that plastic is a direct cause of the disease, they have confirmed a strong connection with it. Therefore, to protect your health, it is recommended to follow these tips:
- Be careful with plastic containers - especially do not use them when they are hot (for tea, soup or microwaved).
- Eat foods rich in antioxidants - blueberries, dark chocolate, green tea, tomatoes and spices reduce inflammation and protect the arteries.
- Eat an active lifestyle - regular physical activity, a healthy diet and reducing stress reduce the overall risk of cardiovascular disease.
- Limit your consumption of plastic - use recyclable, environmentally friendly options instead of single-use plastic containers, packaging and bottles.
This issue still requires a lot of research, but it is clear that the presence of plastic in the body is a very serious issue. Reducing it is an important step not only for nature, but also for your health. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
